• The Centre will serve as a new model in patient treatment that can be duplicated across Canada and around the world, for the rapid diagnosis of other cancers in patients.
• More than 22,900 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
• In 1999, the Canadian Breast Cancer Screening Initiative (CBCSI) adopted a target of seven weeks from screen to diagnosis if a biopsy is required.
• The Princess Margaret has established The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre – a rapid diagnostic clinic for breast cancer that gives individuals their assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan all in one day. The patient then takes the plan back to their referring physician, where they are followed up.
• Currently the Centre serves 12 patients every week
• A fully operating centre could serve 10 times the amount of patients, serving 3,000 patients per year.
• The Centre will reduce patient anxiety and accelerate the transition to treatment.
