From Pilot to Creation: What it is
With initial funding for the pilot provided by The Weekend to End Breast Cancer (WEBC) and Laugh Lines, the program allows a woman or man to be referred to the clinic by their family doctor. In one day, a patient can have a physical exam, a mammogram, an ultrasound and a tissue biopsy if needed – and review the results with a surgeon. Dr. McCready and his 'Dream'
A renowned surgical oncologist at The Princess Margaret, Dr. David McCready and his team understand the hardships of waiting an average of 33 days for a breast cancer diagnosis. Other centres offer rapid diagnosis programs but it is believed that The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre is currently the only Centre in North America, that can provide a breast cancer diagnosis and a treatment plan if required, within one day. • The Centre will serve as a new model in patient treatment that can be duplicated across Canada and around the world, for the rapid diagnosis of other cancers in other patients.
• More than 22,900 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
• In 1999, the Canadian Breast Cancer Screening Initiative (CBCSI) adopted a target of seven weeks from screen to diagnosis if a biopsy is required.
• The Princess Margaret has established The Gattuso Rapid Diagnostic Centre – a rapid diagnostic clinic for breast cancer that gives individuals their assessment, diagnosis and treatment plan all in one day.
